Hoan Kiem Lake in the heart of the city is a popular meeting point with the iconic Ngoc Son Temple Island. The old town enchants with narrow alleyways, traditional markets and colonial architecture.

The Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum and the Temple of Literature are important historical sights, while the Tran Quoc Pagoda on West Lake is the oldest Buddhist pagoda in the city.

For nature lovers, the Marble Mountains and the spectacular Halong Bay with its limestone formations are worthwhile day trips. The Perfume Pagoda, an impressive temple complex in the mountains, can also be reached on a boat trip and a hike.

The Ba Vi National Park, around 60 km from Hanoi, offers lush nature, hot springs and breathtaking views. Another highlight is Ninh Binh, known as the "dry Halong", with its rice fields, karst mountains and the famous boat trip through Trang An or Tam Coc.

Culinary Highlights

Hanoi is a paradise for gourmets and is known for its diverse and aromatic cuisine. Pho, the famous Vietnamese noodle soup with beef or chicken, is the city's culinary flagship. Bun Cha, grilled pork with rice noodles and fresh herbs, became internationally famous thanks to Barack Obama's visit to Hanoi.

Banh Mi, the Vietnamese baguette with various fillings, combines French influences with local ingredients. Cha Ca La Vong, grilled fish with dill and turmeric, is a Hanoi specialty that has been served in traditional restaurants for over 100 years.

For street food fans, Xoi Xeo, sticky rice with mung beans and shallots, is a popular choice. For dessert, try che, sweet soups with coconut milk and beans, or fresh tropical fruits such as mango and pomelo. Hanoi's street kitchens, markets and gourmet restaurants offer an incomparable variety of authentic taste experiences.
