Culinary Highlights

Crete delights with a diverse cuisine that combines fresh, regional ingredients and Mediterranean flavors. Traditional lamb with mountain herbs, often slow-cooked in a wood-fired oven, is a must-try. Equally popular are dakos, toasted bread with tomatoes, feta and olive oil, and kalitsounia, small pastries filled with cheese or herbs.

Fish and seafood lovers get their money's worth on the coasts, especially with grilled octopus or fresh calamari. One specialty is the hearty gamopilafo, a creamy wedding rice dish with lamb or goat.

At the end, don't miss out on loukoumades, small honey balls, or the famous sfakianopita, a sweet cheese pancake with honey. The best accompaniment is a raki, the typical Cretan pomace brandy, or a glass of Cretan wine, which is gaining increasing international recognition.

Arrival & Infrastructure on Site

Crete is easily accessible via the international airports of Heraklion and Chania, which offer numerous direct flights from Europe. The smaller airport in Sitia mainly serves domestic flights. Alternatively, there are regular ferry connections from Piraeus to Heraklion, Chania, Rethymno and Sitia, which make for a relaxed journey by sea.

The island has a well-developed road network, with the New National Road connecting the main towns along the north coast. A rental car is the best way to flexibly explore remote beaches, villages and sights. Public buses run reliably between major towns, but are limited in rural areas. Cabs are widely available, and boats and ferries are a good option for island tours or hidden bays. Crete offers a versatile infrastructure for comfortable and flexible travel.
