Best Journey Time

The best time to visit Siena is usually between May and October, when the weather is warm and sunny and the city fully reveals its lively flair.

In spring (April-May), Tuscany comes to life: mild temperatures between 15 and 22 °C, blooming landscapes and fewer tourists make these months ideal for sightseeing and excursions into the surrounding countryside. Summer (June-August) offers warm to hot days with up to 30 °C, long evenings and numerous events - however, this is also the high season with many visitors, especially for the Palio races in July and August. Autumn (September-October) is particularly appealing: pleasant temperatures, grape harvest, culinary festivals and golden light create perfect conditions for cultural and pleasure trips.

For golfers who want to combine Siena with a stay on Tuscan golf courses, spring and fall are particularly recommended, as it is pleasantly warm but not too hot.

Special Destinations

In addition to its world-famous landmarks, Siena also offers numerous special excursion destinations in the city and the surrounding area. In the historic center, the Piazza del Campo, one of the most beautiful squares in Italy, and the imposing cathedral with its richly decorated façade are among the absolute highlights. The Museo Civico in the Palazzo Pubblico offers important works of art and a panoramic view from the Torre del Mangia. Away from the main streets, narrow alleyways, small churches and traditional stores invite you to explore.

The surrounding area is home to picturesque villages such as San Gimignano with its medieval towers, Monteriggioni with its fully preserved city walls and the wine center of Montalcino, famous for its Brunello. The rolling hills of Tuscany, criss-crossed by vineyards and olive groves, provide the ideal backdrop for excursions by car, bike or on foot. Thermal resorts such as Bagno Vignoni and Bagni San Filippo are also worthwhile destinations for those seeking relaxation. Golfers will find attractive courses in the region, such as the Royal Golf La Bagnaia or the Ugolino Golf Club near Florence, which can be perfectly combined with cultural and culinary experiences.

Culinary Highlights

Siena is a paradise for gourmets and offers a rich culinary tradition that is deeply rooted in Tuscan cuisine. Typical dishes are often simple but full of flavor, characterized by fresh, regional ingredients. Pici, hand-rolled thick pasta, are famous and are often served with sugo all'aglione (tomato and garlic sauce) or game ragout. Ribollita, a hearty vegetable soup with beans and leftover bread, and crostini toscani with chicken liver paste are also among the classics.

Meat lovers will enjoy dishes such as bistecca alla Fiorentina, a large T-bone steak from Chianina beef, or cinghiale in umido, wild boar stew with herbs and red wine. The region is also known for its excellent wines, especially Chianti Classico, Vino Nobile di Montepulciano and Brunello di Montalcino.

For a sweet finish, try specialties such as Panforte di Siena, a spicy fruit and nut cake, Ricciarelli, soft almond cookies, or Cantuccini with Vin Santo. Many restaurants, trattorias and enotecas in Siena offer menus that harmonize perfectly with regional wines - a pleasure for all the senses that can be ideally combined with cultural experiences.

Arrival & Infrastructure on Site

Siena is well connected to Tuscany's transport network and is easily accessible for both international and national travelers. The nearest international airport is Florence (Aeroporto Amerigo Vespucci), around 80 kilometers away, with connections to many European cities. Pisa Airport (around 130 kilometers) also offers numerous direct flights. From both airports, Siena can be reached in around 1.5 to 2 hours by rental car, shuttle bus or train/bus combination.

There are no direct train connections from large cities, as Siena does not have a high-speed connection, but there are good connections via regional trains, for example from Florence or Grosseto. The best way to get around the city is on foot, as the historic center is largely closed to cars. Parking garages on the outskirts and a shuttle bus system make access easier.

A rental car is recommended for trips to the surrounding countryside, golf courses or wineries, as many destinations are located in rural areas. The roads are well developed and scenic routes connect Siena with the picturesque hills, villages and towns of Tuscany. The tourist infrastructure includes a large selection of hotels, charming guesthouses, vacation apartments, restaurants and service facilities that seamlessly combine culture, pleasure and active vacations - including golf.
