Golf course: The Roman Road Course
The golf course
The Roman Road Course at Celtic Manor Resort in South Wales is a scenically impressive 18-hole course (par 70) designed by Robert Trent Jones Sr. It stretches across the hilly Usk Valley near Newport and offers sweeping views of the Severn Estuary all the way to Somerset and Devon. The course runs along the historic Roman road "Via Julia", which gives it its name.
With a length of around 6,600 yards, the course offers a varied mix of wide fairways, strategically placed bunkers and fast, challenging greens. The 16th hole, a short par 3 over water, is particularly striking and requires precision and strong nerves. The undulating fairways and natural terrain contours also make the course challenging and varied.
