Best Journey Time

The best time to play golf in northern Portugal is in spring and fall, i.e. from March to June and from September to November. During these months, the temperatures are pleasantly mild, usually between 15 and 25 °C, and the courses are in excellent condition. The golf courses are also less crowded than in the high season. The summer can be very hot, while the winter is more humid and unstable. Therefore, spring and fall offer the ideal conditions for a relaxing round of golf in northern Portugal.

Special Destinations

In addition to golf, northern Portugal also offers numerous excursion destinations worth seeing. The city of Porto impresses with its historic old town, the famous Ponte Dom Luís I and the traditional port wine cellars in Vila Nova de Gaia. The Douro Valley, one of the oldest wine regions in the world, offers picturesque boat trips and wine tastings. Braga, known as the religious center of Portugal, impresses with the imposing pilgrimage church Bom Jesus do Monte. Guimarães, the "cradle of Portugal", offers a charming old town and a well-preserved medieval castle. If you want to experience nature, you can explore the Peneda-Gerês National Park, which impresses with its wild landscapes, waterfalls and hiking trails. The Atlantic coast offers beautiful beaches, including Esposende and Viana do Castelo, where water sports are also possible.

Culinary Highlights

Northern Portugal offers outstanding cuisine characterized by fresh seafood, hearty meat dishes and excellent wine. One of the region's specialties is Bacalhau à Brás, a dish made from stockfish, eggs and potatoes. The Francesinha, a gratinated sandwich with meat, cheese and a spicy sauce, is particularly popular in Porto. In the Douro Valley and in the Trás-os-Montes region, hearty stews such as Cozido à Portuguesa and grilled lamb are typical. Fresh fish and seafood, including sardines or arroz de marisco (seafood ice cream), are widespread along the coast. A glass of port wine or a fresh Vinho Verde, which goes perfectly with fish dishes, is a natural accompaniment to the meal. Those with a sweet tooth should try the traditional Pastéis de Nata or the regional Papos de Anjo.
