Special Destinations

Madeira offers impressive excursion destinations that showcase the island's scenic diversity. Particularly popular is the Pico do Arieiro, one of the highest peaks on the island with spectacular views. The levadas, old irrigation channels, lead through dense forests and offer unique hiking experiences. In Funchal, the historic old town invites you to stroll around, while the famous Mercado dos Lavradores market hall presents exotic fruits and regional products. Another highlight is the botanical garden with its variety of plants and views over the bay. On the coast, Cabo Girão, one of the highest cliffs in Europe, is a delight with its glass viewing platform. The neighboring island of Porto Santo with its long sandy beach is also worth a visit.

Culinary Highlights

Madeira's cuisine delights with fresh fish, seafood and regional specialties. The espetada, juicy beef grilled on a bay leaf skewer, and the black scabbardfish (espada), often served with banana, are particularly well-known. Bolo do Caco, a traditional flatbread with garlic butter, is part of every meal. Fresh fruit such as passion fruit or pineapple enrich the cuisine, as does the famous Madeira wine, which is appreciated all over the world. The traditional honey cake Bolo de Mel, which is baked according to old recipes, is recommended to round off the meal.
